And here I thought this was a simple little seal replacement.

Well, you didn't have to put a dial indicator on the axle to see if you had too much play. I used to put a old plow beam, turned upside (pointing up) down on the end of the cherry picker to get those axle housings off from under the cabs. You will most likely have contamination in the main rear housing also and just hope it hasn't chewed up the bull gear from flopping around.
 
Well look on the bright side. YOU do not have to hunt for the problem!!! LOL Wish you well on the total repair. I know you have had a bit of bad luck lately with repairs blooming out of control.
