A dairy farm that is next to some of my bean fields has an old 1066 that they cut hay with. This winter they repainted and put on the "black stripe".Whats the deal with adding the stripe? Sorry I am a green guy and don't understand.

In John Deere men's terms he is trying to pass it off as a 1972 4020 as the Black Stripe tractors were the last of the 66 series.

so that's why there more of them then the factory made. Never undersand the following of them anyway, hard to shift and loud. When I was in high school(20 something years ago) a kid kept bragging bout his would out pull my 4020 so I said lets try my 4630 to which he would say that a lot newer tractor! He never did get it !

The Black Stripe 66 series were only made in 1976. IH was getting ready to introduce the 86 series and wanted to update the 66 series to help in getting them sold. There are many 66 series that have had the black stripe added. A true black stripe will have the serial number id plate on the right rear side on the rear housing and the flywheel housing is more rounded. The earlier versions have the SN id plate on a cover over the flywheel.

As far as the 1066 is concerned they are old work horse and can do much more than they were rated to do. They had a very good engine and were very dependable. The problems occurred when the fuel was turned up and you would have TA, clutch, and final drive failures. A good 1066 could easily outwork any Deere tractor at the time, but the Deere was much quieter and more convenient to drive.

I worked on a few 4630's and many 1066. Never saw a 10 back away from that green one. Sounds like a tractor also. Black stripe means nothing to me, just latest ones to come off the line before new models.

We had a 4430 and a 1066, both turned up. Even with the sound gard, I preferred the 1066, especially for disking. With the factory oval muffler, ours was like a sewing machine. I loved that 414. It wouldn't choke out and quit like the 404 at low rpm.

JD seemed to taker a bigger overall picture on tractor design. For sure IH engines would out do JD engines in almost everything but you paid for it with substandard tranny/hydraulics and a glorified 1960s cab.

Here is my Black stripe 966. Real tough old tractor. Sure it is not the quietest tractor I have ever run, but lots of power.

Now that is music to my ears. Prefer a IH shift to a Deere. When I worked at Deere dealer, a down deep green customer, who I knew well, was overheard that he would not even get into the 1086 I had in the shop working on it because he knew you couldn't shift it. I did actually like the transmission on the Deere to be truthful but talk about bucks put in them on repair.

The changes made to the 66 series tractors in preparation for the 86 series were introduced over a period of time so you really can't go by where the serial number is located or what clutch housing is on the tractor.

The black strip graphic package was introduced with the following serial numbers:

766 - 16541
966 - 31263
1066 - 55425
1486 - 28897
Hydro 100 - 12235

I don't have a paper parts manual for the 1566 so I have no way of looking to see what the serial number was when the change was made for those tractors.
