Is This Asbestos?

This paneling stuff is lining the inside of my garage. Bout an inch thick. A neighbor who has lived here a lot longer than I said it was old soundproofing material from one of the local schools. Do you think it's made with asbestos? I want to remove it all one day.

I believe it is wood fiber based material. Used to use the loose stuff as packing in boxes around breakables. Of course the binder that was used may/could of had asbestos. gobble

Looks like the same wood-fiber stuff they used to put in the cartons they shipped baby chicks in. Those panels appear to have been saturated with some kind of bonding agent and compressed. But who knows?...that bonding agent may have contained asbestos.

(quoted from post at 23:04:59 09/13/15) You can get it tested to see if it contains asbestos, the money the test may cost would be cheaper than the alternative.

Ditto! Get it tested. If it is asbestos HAVING it removed will be expensive. I don't thing they are going to let you do it yourself. And they will find out. You don't want to burry that stuff on your property. So that means taking it to the landfill.

If it is a pressed board, it is likely Tectum. Great sound-proofing material, and not asbestos. But I would cut out a chunk, take a torch and try to burn it. If it burns, it is not asbestos. But it might still be rock wool, or fiberglas, or someting else, whihch wouyld still be totally harmless. But if it burns, no problem.

And for this reason, use a false name with whoever tests it. If it is, coat it with paint to encapsulate it, and dont remove it. If you are going to remove it, and it is, then you need to worry. Respirator, tyvek suits, lots of trash bags, and a deep pit. Professional asbestos removal is very expensive.

Don't think its. I had training on it a few years back. Not sure where you are located but in Indiana u can remove it yourself. We tore on old house down on a farm we bought and had a tub with a liner brought in. It was the siding so we wetted it down and tore it off. as long as theres no dust its safe. Cost bout $300 to get rid of it.

we have the same panels in a state university building I work in, not asbestoes, we work in an office with that stuff on the ceiling, building built in the 60's I think, There is asbestoes in the building but in floor tiles and pipe insulation.

That looks like what we used to call "excelsior"...a coarse wood shaving product used in packing crates. What it is combined with is anyone's guess. I would get it tested because it appears there is some disturbance to the edges.

ot likely. But this is:

Just do a simple Google search for the Tectum company. I have installed truckloads of it over the last 35 years. It is a very versatile product with excellent sound deadening qualities.

I've seen that stuff used widely and to my knowledge...not asbestos soaked or coated, but I'll do you a favor, or rather my friend "Google" will. Here is a link to asbestos.com. Contact and send them a photo of it and let them guess or run through their compiled list of asbestos products. If I were a politician, instead of using the word "compiled", I would have used the word "comprehensive", but I'm not and referred to their "compiled" list of asbestos products instead.

Good luck,

Mark
