Engine head to a machine shop

I am going to send a head from a Farmall 504 to the machine shop to get planed, checked for cracks, new valve guides, and new valve seats. I would assume that the valves and valve springs are left in when you bring it in, right?

It all depends: Do you want the valves inspected, ground, if re-usable, and seated in the new seats? It will cost extra to do the valves, but it would result in a better job.

yes, just dump them the head and they do the rest. don't forget once guides and seats are replaced the valves need refacing.
maybe even replacing, depending on stem and face wear. valve spring height is also checked.

Call the machine shop.Or go see them. Ask them what they require. Have a conversation BEFORE the work is done.

better job? there is no other way.no such thing as installing used un- resurfaced valves with new seats, just not going to work. never even heard of that.anybody that does that has no clue, and is not a machinist. you gotta get your angle of the dangle matching and in the right position on the valve.

That's what I figured. Just wanted to double check. I am going to try and get to the machine shop before hand but I am pretty much gone M-F and Saturdays are up in the air. I will definitely call them though.

Discuss the process with the machine shop!

When we took our FA Regular head in - one machinist gave us a short tour. In talking with him we found out they magnaflux them all to check for cracks...

THEN they put grey primer on them, so it's ready for you to paint.

YIKES!!! We are keeping our Regular rusty - I would have cried when we went to pick it up if it was all primered up. Husband may have shed a tear too.

Also, my husband took the head all apart and cleaned everything (and numbered the springs and valves) before we had ever talked to the shop... that only saved about $25 dollars I think. He said he could have just as well let them do it for that small amount of savings.

Just get 8 new valves, 8 springs, rotators, keepers all US made [if possible] and be done with it for say $150 more. As far as removing all the old valves, it only takes a few minutes and you can see the condition of them.....Ron

I just bring the head in, valves,
springs, and all still in it. They take it
apart, check for cracks, replace what's
needed and make everything like new. Then I
pick up the fully assembled head again and
bolt it on. Been to 3 different shops and
they were all like that.

Yes. That is how it works. Only thing you might want to do yourself is scrape some of the crud off.
