Grinder/mixer tank windows

when using a grinder/mixer without scales and using the chart on the side and windows in the tank to judge how much feed do use use the feed level when running with the feed piled up higher around the sides or do you try to level it out somehow? Probably a couple hundred lbs divergence between running and leveled out if using the chart and marks on the tank.

(quoted from post at 15:36:24 09/12/15) I never stopped to level it out. Can"t imagine anyone did. Too putzy.

That's what I figured. Just resurrected a New Holland 355. The tank is 25% bigger than my Owatonna and seemed like you could be pretty big difference between level and operating.

Those windows are marked pretty close if the feed is dry. If you grind a lot of hay in it will be off
some because it stands up more then.

If there are windows on both sides, just average the two readings---or stop the mill and look inside to see if the level is much different by the windows and estimate from there.

When you are using a grinder mixer your ration doesn't end up THAT accurate anyway even with a scale compared to the computerized feed mills in town. Do we test our corn for weight and protein before we run it through the grinder? I never did and I don't think any of my neighbors did either back then. We just drove up to the bin, got the grinder howling and stood and watched till it was done. That said, the Arts Way I used didn't have a scale but I always wished it did. Maybe I could have had a little better ration, then again, maybe not. How accurate do those scales stay anyway? I never have had much faith in any scale on portable equipment. The weight of the corn I was grinding varied all the way from the low 50's to the low 60's in weight depending on what kind of a corn growing year we had and what hybrid of corn was run through the grinder. I always ground till the feed quit flowing down in the windows and started building back up till it was 3/4 of the way up the top window. That was my 'scale' if you will. Almost all of it was straight corn/protein only which made it easy.

It has been 20 years since I ground feed but I seem to remember that you can level it out somewhat by running the mixer at near idle speed.

I just posted the above but remembered it was probably not idle speed but experiment and find the right throttle speed that makes it near level.
