What does a cubic yard of dirt weigh? I need to haul some & need to know approx. weight. Thanks Gerald

According to this document "NIST Handbook Specifications and Tolerances for Field Standard Weight Carts", at the US NIST, the average density of dirt is 120 lbs per cubic foot. 27 cubic ft in a cubic yard. Multiply to get your answer.

When studying trenching ,the class was told it can weight as much as a truck. But really that's a bit high [ to scare you into always shoring up your trench]. A real good estimate is 2000-3000 lbs. . When a trench collapses people think they are digging out a live but suffocating victim. In reality they are removing an already crushed dead body.

The quarry I worked at had an electronic scale on the loader and we billed everything out at 2700 lbs per cubic yard.
