OT Honey Bees

I noticed last night that honey bees are making a hive in the weep hole in my brick on the front porch. What is best way to get them out. Hate to kill them, if I don't have to. They are good for the crops.

I have had similar issue and the bee keepers could not do anything due to the fact they could not get the queen out of the wall without tearing up my house. I ended up placing a vacuum sweeper near the opening and let it run for a week. I too did not want to kill them but saw no other way to move them. Unfortunately it killed them. Mine was near my back door and made it impossible for me to use the door.

Good luck.

Years ago, a friend and beekeeper devised his own vacuum to remove nests. A local elementary school had one in the corner of their old brick building, he was able to use this device to recover the hive, somehow captured the queen as well. Each situation will be different, best bet like was said, find a beekeeper and see if its possible. His story actually made the newspaper back then. Hopefully they are not of africanized kind, would hate to deal with those!

I used to see many bees around my yard in past years. This year was different. Bees were almost extinct here at my place in S.E. Iowa. I would get professional help and try to save these bees. We need bees, as they pollinate crops and all kinds of plants and fruit trees. Do not destroy them.

Dave,If it is where you have access to it a good bee keeper can trap them out with a hive or a nuc hive and a bee escape and a funnel over the weep hole.If they have been in the wall a while it will take some time to get them and you may not get all of them and the queen out.Check to see if they can come out of another weep hole also and block them off.Block off the hole when done or they could be back again next year.

dave, i see you are in texas. be careful incase they are the africanized "killer bees" the hive is very aggressive. like the other guys said, call a beekeeper or your local ag office.

Ask for prices when you talk to a beekeeper; some are reasonable and some want your truck!

I'm all in favor of saving the honey bees if possible, but if they invade my house, all bets are off. I WILL eradicate them.

if they just arrived i doubt they could survive the winter, not enough time to store honey and pollen

Now a new thing in my area seems to be the police are having bee experts [ usually just an educated cop beekeeper himself]. Even NY City police [ NYPD] has experts to remove the queen and move the hive. The beekeepers that advertise are going to charge you.

Last summer there was an active hive near the entrance to a power plant, more nuisance than harm, but people often scare of bees and wasps, so they called a bee keeper out. He set up a nest next to their nest and somehow got the queen to move to his nest. After a couple of days, he blocked access to their original nest, and after most of the bees moved into his nest, he moved them away.

I try to be nice to honey and bumble bees, and am starting to see more and more honey bees returning. Bumble bees have never dwindled by me. Wasps don't bother me either. Hornets and yellow jackets though...

Good luck.

Try to contact a local bee keeper. They will likely remove them for you. I had a swarm come to my place a few years back and made a mass about the size of a basketball in a tree. I called a bee keeper and he came and got them for free and gave me a quart of raw honey.
