Help on a 47 Farmall Super C - started & solenoid

Hi guys!

I just picked up a 1947 Super C. It has been converted from 6v to 12v. I am replacing the started & solenoid.

OK, just replaced the battery (12v)

The starter and apparently the starter solenoid are bad. I am trying to understand how the voltage affects which started I pick. I know that the tractor originally came with a 6v battery and a started for a 6v system.

I can find the 6v starter. Still looking for the solenoid.

Should I use a 12v starter? How about the solenoid?

THANKS

Greg

I will take you at your word that: "I am replacing the started & solenoid"

THEREFORE no need to talk about how a 6 volt starter will still work (can be hard on some old style starter drives), good or bad or any of that etc etc

SINCE YOU ARE REPLACING STARTER AND SOLENOID ANYWAY,,,,,,,,AND SINCE ITS NOW A 12 VOLT TRACTOR

The answer is obvious.

Get a new 12 volt starter and a new 12 volt solenoid WELL DUH

Ask yourself this, if you had a factory stock 12 volt tractor and say you needed a new starter, would you buy a 6 volt or a 12 volt???????????????? (PS Id buy a 12 volt starter)

Just because its possible to change an old 6 volt tractor over to 12 volts and retain the 6 volt starter to save money and it can "work" (I've done it had no problems, but sometimes the old style starter drive (can get better replacements nowadays) crapped out) IS NO REASON TO BUY A NEW 6 VOLT STARTER FOR USE ON A NOW 12 VOLT TRACTOR

I wouldn't be surprised if you get answers about how a 6 volt starter will still work on a 12 volt tractor (I know Ive done it myself), BUT YOU STATED YOURE GETTING A NEW STARTER ANYWAY.

Great. Thanks.

I asked the question that way because:
(1) I can find a 6v starter for that tractor.
(2) yesterdays tractors does not have the 12v version.
(3) I am not sure exactly what to look for in a 12v. Since an inquiry into a 1947 Farmall Super C comes up with 6v starters, how do a find a 12v starter that works with a 1947 Farmall Super C.

Thanks again for any help.

does your super c have a saddle mount switch right on the starter or a separate starter solenoid? on the yt parts it shows the super c with a saddle mount switch. there is a 12v solenoid available p/n dr 1467. not sure if it will work for your tractor.

Answer: I have a toggle switch (with a line from the + battery terminal) running to the signal input on the solenoid. The solenoid and the starter are two seperate parts.

OK guys, here is my proposed purchase. Please check me here:

starter (12v): This is what was on the tractor and has failed. Note that it is not specifically for a super C. But it is the best I can find.

solenoid (12v): This is a 12v for all farmall models. Looks very much like the failed one.

Thanks for all of your help. I am jumping into an old tractor here knee deep.

You could throw this at the 2N,9N,8N guys, and they will all tell you that your operating 6v starter will work just fine. The trick is having your tractor in condition so that it starts easily, AND, don't crank it too long. HTH

A Farmall C did not have a solenoid. And a replacement starter for a C will not have the atud to attach a cable from a solenoid. I have a Farmall B that has a stud added to the housing and is equipped with a solenoid, It has been that way since I bought the tractor used in 1954.You need to find a good starter shop. I had my starter rebuilt this spring. For some more unrequested information , a 1947 will not be a super. Good luck but do not waste ,money on a starter you may not need

If you had an old junk 6 volt starter, a genny and starter shop may well be able to convert it for 12 volt operation, maybe by swapping out the fields etc.

First you need to find a shop that knows what they are doing. As I learned the hard way, just because they've been around forever doesn't mean they know what they are doing, they are just the only one doing it.

I don't know if it matters as far as the starter, but Super C production ran from 1951 thru 1954 according to Tractor Data's website.

I guess I didn't read down far enough to see that others have already informed you about the C VS Super C Years.

Farmall,A, B, C. Super A, and Super C used the same starter. The H and early M used the same starter. If you put a solenoid on your C you may use a starter from an H or M

The button is different location on the C. The A and B used a push where the C used a pull and the buttons are placed different. H and Ms used a stud with different sw.

I looked at the starter you provided the link to, and nowhere do I see where they state it will fit a super C. We have a 48 C that is 6 volt, but it still starts fine that way. I like to start it with the crank, it makes me feel good when it starts the second quarter-turn!

The C never did use a solenoid they has a sw mounted on top of a button and you pulled a rod to start. Your system is something soneone rigged up so now the problem. Get a rebuilt starter for the C then use the saddle sw and rod then you will be set to go.
