Ford 8n selenoid

I put a new selenoid on my ford 8n and when I tightened the nut on the selenoid the starter started to run. I can not get it to turn over with the starter button any suggestions

It is either wired wrong or you have the wrong selenoid. Ford tractor and Ford automotive silenoids are not the same.

The 8N used it own type of solenoid and is a 3 wire one. Using a 4 wire one will not work. If you have a 3 wire one then you either have a bad one or it is on back wards

You have the wrong solenoid. Ford 8N solenoids are a ground to make crank type. The starter button does not provide power it provides ground. If you install one that is made to have power provided then you will have a dead short when you hook the wires up.

If you have the right solenoid, do you have it oriented correctly?
The 8N solenoid mounted on the starter with the small terminal
in toward the engine. It won't work with the small terminal out.

Then again, it just wouldn't work. It would not spin when you
hook up the battery. That would be a different matter.

" If you install one that is made to have power provided then you will have a dead short when you hook the wires up. "

NOT true. While you ARE correct about the correct solenoid needing to be grounded to engage, if the opposite (incorrect) solenoid is used there will be no "dead short". It simply won't engage at all.

I have a 4 wire one on my 8n. Power goes from the ignition to one post. The other post goes to the ground push button by the shifter. Everything works as it should.
