I have a an old 6.9 diesel that suddenly lacks power and sounds differently. A bongo drum sound can be heard from the intake. Can really heard the sound with the breather off. Can you guys give me some ideas about what the problem might be.

Bent push rod...broken rocker arm.. bent or stuck intake valve...blown head gasket between cylinders.I'll venture a guess you are hearing compression exhausting through the intake

figure out which side it is on--loosen injector lines one at a time , or heat gun to measure cold cylinder, pull that valve cover. hopefully broken pushrod.

A broken EXHAUST rocker or bent or broken pushrod on the exhaust side will make them pop back into the intake manifold when the intake valve opens, as well as the things that can go wrong on the INTAKE side.

Also, it may have simply ingested a piece of oily debris from the intake manifold and lodged it under an intake valve, which will pass in time. (Intake is oily because of crankcase venting into the intake.)

Sometimes, a tip breaks off off a glowplug, which can get lodged/hammered under a valve, or a valve can even get bent by a piston smacking glowplug debris into a valve.
