How does one remove a muffler from an exhaust pipe when it is firmly seized/rusted in place without destroying the muffler? I have an IH 584 from which I would like to remove the hood, but the seized muffler is presenting a bit of a problem. The ceramic coated muffler is a little bit pricey to replace if the present one is still good.

you can increase the length of the slits in the mounting flange with a cut off wheel if heating proves fruitless. Just cut far enough to get a good wiggle going. Good luck

I'll add a suggestion....
If the muffler is clamped to the pipe, heat it where the clamp has indented the two pipes together. That is the spot where they usually bind. If and when you re-assemble, see if you can find a band clamp like the big trucks use. They may be difficult to find in a smaller size.

Use a die grinder to make a slit up one side, or even two. Then you can get a chisel or punch and tap it off easily.
