Anyone like the smell of blooming buckwheat? I have grown it two years now and the smell sure does stay with you....probably why they call it buttwheat LOL!

Grandpa had a soft spot for growing buckwheat, Grandma didn't like corn in front of the house- she couldn't keep an eye on her friend next door. Always looks pretty when blooming, I guess I don't remember a less-than-pleasant aroma. Grandpa used to love Limburger and onion sandwiches, so he may not have been the best judge of smells...

We use to grow about 60 acres a year back in the 60's people would bring there bee hives in for the honey, some would go to a flour mill and the rest mixed in with the feed, back then we would fill a pick up with about 40 bu of ear corn 3 bags each of Buckwheat, wheat and oats, go to the feed mill and add a bit of salt & mineral and that was the feed ration. We would get some of the Honey from the bee people and some Buck Wheat flour,, I always thought that was a Great breakfast,Buck Wheat pancakes, with some Sausage on the side and plenty of Honey for syrup...

(quoted from post at 05:18:49 09/02/15) Honey bees love it and deer will come from a long ways to eat it.

I noticed the turtle doves were going crazy for the seed when I planted it. We have bees and last year the field was buzzing with them. Bee Keeper says the honey is dark and heavy from buckwheat, he said he didn't take any honey last year because production was too low....will see this year. Bee activity isn't as heavy, but may be because I planted it late. This years best sweetcorn was on the ground I had buckwheat on last year....coincidence??

I haven't had buckwheat pancakes in years. My grandma used to make them every now and then. I wonder if you can still buy buckwheat flower?

It always seems that some crops complement the next crop, the old timers kinda had that figures out..and Buck Wheat honey is dark and has it's own unique flavor,,,I wonder how that would be in a "home Made Whiskey"?? Maybe a new brand could be in the making.....

Some of the tractor shows have it along with other mixes,, even Buck Wheat honey and Sorghum molasses..that is where I have gotten my last few "Fixes" of it..

I used to eat only Buc Wheats cereal for breakfast. There is a couple pounds of seed in a bucket in the barn, I guess now I'll have to find a spot to plant it next Spring!
