ploughing with a massey 1080.

Have heard that this is not really a good tractor for ploughing...Plough i'm going to use is a 4/14 Kniverland....yep an oldy but goody one, heard that ploughing is hard on end drives...is this so...& how come...

A neighbor had one as his main tractor, he did all his tillage with it. Don't know if he had any problems with it, but it wasn't big enough and he traded it for a case 2090.

I know...had used one years ago at MacDonald college, mid you those were rentals...& relatively new..mine has 4,800hrs on it in good shape...just had heard that from some....

I can't speak of the 1080 specifically, but we've got a 285 that dad plowed with for years. He hated plowing and would choose to rent a large MFWD tractor with a chisel over using the plow unless he had to.

Not that the tractor couldn't do it, but being that the draft senses from the top link and the plow was a semi-mounted, there was no draft on it. Some ground was better than others, but in tough ground, it was miserable.

Now we've got an Oliver 1855 as the heavy hitter, and plowing with that is a breeze. Some tractors are better for certain jobs than others.

Neighbor has a 1080.Awsome 85 horse tractor! Amazeing what that 4 banger will pull. He's had it for 20+ years,no major problems.318 Perkins gets good economy, too.Never fails to start,no matter how cold.

Don all you needed to use the MF 285 for plowing was the Massey semi mount hitch. It has a top link part that transfers the pull to the draft sensing linkage. It actually works pretty well. Here is a picture of one.

IF your tractor has top link sensing draft control you use the top set of lift arm pins. If your tractor has lower arm sensing draft control you use the bottom lift arm pins.

I think secretly my dad just hates plowing. I've seen some of these things in the manual before, but never in person.

I was lucky enough to score a 1000 RPM pto setup for the 285 a couple years ago for $20 (another rare find for the 1080/1085/285). Dad asked me why in the world I bought it, and now if he needs to just pick up a little bit with the chopper, or spray corn, he puts the 1000 RPM on the 285 and uses that.

Have a 1080 and it will pull 4-14's just fine. Yes the final drives are weak and what wrecks them is heavy 3pt loads.
