Replaced the alternator in my 1998 Chev. Put in a new Delco with a sticker on it Made in China. It lasted a month. Replaced it again. The new one varies from 12v to 16v. My mechanic says it should probably be changed again.
Anyone had experience with Bosch? He said that is another option.
Thanks for all your help and comments

If you think that is bad I heard on the news the other day that GM is going to set up planting in China to have Chevs built there and shipped to the U.S.

It's possible there is a fault on the vehicle that is adversely affecting the alternator .
No substitute for a test bench.

Would you think it's possible that these parts could be coming from the same place as the other cheaper parts brands, just different stickers and boxes? I do have any verification but I have heard of that going on.

You are right, I had an old caddy. It fired 3 alternators before I discovered it was
the car's fault. If I let car sit for 3 days, battery was drained by a parasitic load,
but had enough juice to start. When I would hit 65 mph, I smelled smoke. Fried
alternator.

Hi, I had a 1992 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1V6 and every summer when it woud get hot the alternator would blow because the alternator was at the back near the firewall and it had very little cooling.
GM get replacing it free of charge until the warranty ran out. Local auto parts store told me to install a Bosch and the problems would be over. He was correct. BUT that was several years ago and I don't know if Bosch has started building them in China or not. The country of manufacture should be on the box or on the part.

It only makes financial sense. For quite a few years now, the engine in the Chevy Equinox has been made in China and the transmission in the thing has been made in Japan.

Seems like most "new" alternators and starters are made in China. A lot of the "rebuilts" are made in Mexico, although the last rebuilt starter for my Ford that I bought was made in Malaysia.
Remember that, for the most part, ACDelco is really just a relabeler, NOT a real manufacturer, although most GM fans will never believe it.

The world of manufacturing/marketing confuses me.
I purchased a ZTR with B&S engine with label stating made in Japan.
I purchased a presser washer with Honda engine with label stating made in China.

I have used several China built NEW AC Delco water pumps to fit Ford and GM that have done well, as good as any done in the US.

One really good deal is NEW China built brake cylinders for no more and sometimes less than the US made rubber parts only kit used to cost.

The ting is you get a new smooth cast iron cylinder, VS putting new rubber parts in the old rust pitted cylinder.
You have a much higher chance of success with the complete new cylinder,VS kitting a rusted old cylinder.

That is a surprise for the employees at Tanawanda NY and St Catherine's Ontario. They had no idea that they were actually in China .

bad out of the box is always, and has always been possible, no matter the origin.
But, original, replacement, and another replacement?
agree with the others, the problem is in the car somewhere.

china junk? don't worry, they will get better.
History is always a circle and repeats itself.
We are all old enough to remember made in japan meaning junk.
Now they are the elite. (before you yell at me read some generator, small engine stuff, threads. The advice from all us old guys is...spend the extra money, buy a Honda)
The same will be true with china...won't take long.
I just hope they still want to be our friend when they are King of the manufacturers....of everything.

The last bearings I bought for my JD baler were designed and marketed by Seiko....you know, the watch folks. Bearings were made in
China to their spec. As fine a product as I ever had in my hand.

I think the oriental mindset has contributed a lot to our way of life that our suppliers didn't care to consider....GM for one, recalling the CEO back just before the oriental express invaded the USA: "We'll build and sell what we want to and they (the consumer) will just have to buy it because he has no other choice". Don't remember the guy's name but had a long face and at the time made somewhere around $450k/year.

Well I guess the orientals show'd him a thing or two. Same with everything. For example, remember when NOTHING had a remote control? When TV's first came out with them they were a mechanical chime. Remember when you had an electrical device that had a mechanical thermostat contact that would arc itself to death and you or a repairman would have to come out and change it..... Today it's electronic, push button, exact temp to the degree and AC's even have remotes.

Times change and we are in changing times. If you can't do what sells, cross train so that you can. But in the mean time, that pay check you get buys a lot more oriental, and other places in the world, than it used to.

So there's my input on the universal gripe session that seem to be getting pretty common these days on the TRACTOR forum!

ark, I think this part of your sentence says a whole lot! "designed and marketed by Seiko....you know, the watch folks. Bearings were made in China to their spec."
If a marketer/seller specifies junk, they will build it for him & if marketer/seller specifies a precision/long life/quality product they will built it for him.
