Does anyone know the speed in "road" gear of a Model A Thieman Tractor? Would it keep up to the 10 mi/hr speed of the tractor drives in our area? Thank you.

Ralph: If I err not, the Thieman was a "kit" tractor, where the buyer furnished the driveline (typically from a Ford model A, though many others were used as well) and installed it in the Thieman frame. Because of this, there's no easy way of knowing what the speeds are going to be, as each tractor had the potential to be unique depending on exactly what components were used. On a separate but related note, the Ford model A was the basis for many of the improvised tractors, often called "doodlebugs" or "puddle jumpers", that flourished during the time period, and I've seen several that were capable of considerably over 10 mph. It should be easy enough to test the tractor's speed--most GPS devices, including many smart phones, have a MPH indicator application built in, or find someone with a radar gun.

The Theiman I drove probably made 10-12 MPH but it also felt dangerous at that speed with all the frame flex and hand operated brakes. Far as I know the gearing was the same for all of them but I could be wrong. They had a belt driven governor and I'm sure the governor can be messed with to up the engine speed. Yes it was a kit tractor with Theiman making a frame that was made to accommodate a Model A power train. If BigJT is reading this maybe he can chime in. He Knows a whole lot more about them than I do. He has a Theiman with a flathead V8 but I don't know if V8's were put in them from the factory or not. Theiman tractors were made in Albert City Iowa, my home town but production ended long before I came to this earth and I have never seen one in the field. We sometimes have up to a half dozen of them at our local threshing show.

Have someone follow you in a car or truck to see how fast you are going, simple.

VERY OBVIOUS!!!!! But not so simple in all circumstances. Waaaaaay more difficult than accessing the information always very accessible here. :D
