I was working on getting some of our old stock pulling tractors running the past couple of days up at Pop's and just happened to look up in the top of the shed. I hadn't for years noticed these things my great grand-dad had hung up there back in the 40s. Anyone else have these hanging in the barn? gm

Nope. Would explain it if its for tobacco, that don't grow around here.....

In the granary there are wood poles with spikes on them up in the eves, for sticking ears of corn on to dry out and keep the rats and mice away. Before hybrid corn....

You did not say where you where at but those really look like tobacco rails. You would hang a stick of cut tobacco across two of the rails.

I'm trying to figure the notches in the rafters. A missing diagonal brace? A strong-back? But they're angled the wrong way.

Probably recycled lumber. Half of my grandfathers barn came from another old barn.

my guess was tobacco hangers, i'd also guess that the leanto was built from recycled lumber as the notches don't line up.....

As always you guys are fast to recognize the PIC. My great grandpa grew his own tobacco. Dad remembers him making his own plug tobacco. I kind of remember seeing the patch where he grew it but not really well enough to describe it. I pretty sure the barn add on was already in place when they moved there in the mid 40s. That part was used as a loafing shed in winter when we milked. This is west central MO. gm
