Farmall A Steering

I bought an A last summer, with a belly mower, for our yard. So far, it's been great, but has had pretty loose steering. Two weeks ago, it just locked up. Barely turn one way or the other. I unscrewed the cap on the front of the steering box and 3/8" bearings started falling out... I've got most of it apart, but I'm kinda stuck now. I'm no mechanic, but can usually figure things out. When I push the steering rod all the way back toward the seat, it turns that tie rod connector back and forth perfectly. I can't seem to find an exploded picture of what goes into that steering box. Do I need to completely remove the front axle to get that box off and get inside to check everything out? I NEED HELP!

Yes , you need to drop the axle to remove the
steering shaft. Sometimes you can rotate the
steering gear or flip it over to eliminate the
slop in the gear box.

Can't you remove the steering wheel and remove the cap off the steering box then. Just turn the shaft out the gear box?

You have that cap off now so just remove the steering wheel and screw the shaft out to so if the bearing parts you found belong on the end of the shaft. By the sounds of the size of the balls you found you probably will need to take the drag link on the bottom off so you can then take the sector apart. I am guessing the bearing at the top in the housing is shot and thats where the balls came from. I have rebuilt several of those and i would replace all seals bushings ect so when you are finished it will steer lie new again. The whole replacement parts are available around 55 or so. Its been a while since i have bought parts and they shouldnt have went up much. Any questions you can call 319-430-3907

I can't seem to screw the shaft out of the steering sector. It only comes out a little bit. I plan on replacing everything (seals, bushings, etc) to get it back to normal. I was planning on doing this as a winter project... I have researched almost every parts website looking for all parts to replace this steering, but no one seems to list them. I bought a seat suspension for my 966 from Devon's Tractor Parts and he said he had everything I would need. Hope so. Thanks for the info!

If you have the big nut off the steering sector it shouldscrew out if not something is realy ba and the whole sector bottom will need to be removed to see what is caught in there someplace. I have never had a problem turning the shaft out the end after removing the steering wheel
