OT Windows 10

For the last couple days a message keeps coming up that I can get Windows 10 for free. Just wondering if the guys that have Windows 10 think it's worth getting or should I just forget it. I have heard a few bad things about it. Thanks

I have it now. At first I thought, you old fool, what have you gotten into now, but after a few days it seems ok. However I am not advising anyone to use it or not because we are all different and some people just hate to learn anything new.

If you do down load it remember there is a learning curve and it may take a while. It also helps if you have a computer nerd in your family.

Ive had an upgrade icon show up for a little bit but am going to do like a few said....wait just a little while yet. Ive heard there isn't a windows media player included for DVDs or something to that effect. Going to do a little more research when more reviews are in. Supposed to have up to a year to still upgrade for free. I would love to walk into a computer store and tell them Id like to upgrade to Windows 98....just to see the look on their face ;)

I let into pressure from Microsoft to upgrade to Windows 10. I had Win 7 before and was happy with it but thought, gee I had to try the latest. About a week ago I upgraded and so far the only thing I have found good about it is that you can go back toyour old OS within a month of upgrade. I don't have multiple devices doing computer stuff, that seems to be advantage for Windows 10. Also that eventually Microsoft will force us to do it as they will quit supporting other operating systems as they have already on XP. I have been unable to play videos on computer since upgrading. Screen goes green or black and says video won't play. One was a video showing the good stuff onWindows 10 and how to use it. I sometimes get a message that says I need to upgrade my Adobe flash player, but when I try it says that Adobe flash player is a part of Win 10 so I don't need to upgrade. I went to Microsoft site, Community where people talk about problems with it and there seem to be many. I suspect if you are real computer savy in the newer stuff you can probably work through the issues. I am not anymore and just like my computer to get email, news, YTD mag forum and answer questions I have.. My feeling is that Win 10 is "not ready for prime time" yet and that Microsoft is sort of using us as testers to learn the problems, like the old Beta versins. I would not recommend it to anyone, especially if you aren't already bald. I am going back to 7.

I upgraded. I'm thinking about going back. The only real problem I've found is I don't care for the photo editing on 10. My video works find and if I pop in a DVD it plays fine. But I have a very fast chip set and plenty of memory both vid and motherboard. For those with problems there check system requirements and either go back to 7 or upgrade your hardware.

If you're happy with what you've got now and comfortable using it - stay with it unless you enjoy the 'bling'.

I have 5 pc's, consisting of two laptops and three desktops and I have upgraded all 5 to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and 8.1. Very happy with the upgrade although Windows 7 was great, but it is over 8 years old and too many patches causing all types of strange behavior at times. Love the all apps button which is like the start/all programs in Windows 7. Wife likes IE 11 over the new Edge browser, so I loaded both on the tool bar. Solved all of my problems in Windows 7 like Blue Tooth not working, and all of the other annoying problems. Very stable to me. It took me a few hours to learn about Windows 10, time well spent to find apps like Windows Update ( In Settings).

I am running Office 2007 Professional on all five and these apps all continue to work fine, no issues.

Thus I recommend upgrading to Windows 10 while it is free to Windows 7 & 8.1 devices. Want a 8 year old used car or a new one? Easy decision as upgrade was simple and flawless.

any benefit to edge over IE?

I hear edge does not import your favorites from IE? seems a bad situation?

Are there any registry issues tha tmake you install software after the upgrade?

lastly.. if the win10 install fails or doesn't work out.. is it still possible to roll back to your prev os?

For those that have installed 10 or are considering it, you might want to do search on the privacy settings. Everything gets reported back to the mothership under MS 10, and while I know that's not a huge concern for most, some might not like the under the hood snooping that goes on, especially with emails, etc.

Also the update settings, after you download updates, they are then available for other people to download, so your computer will be using your Internet connection to upload parts of the updates you've gotten to anyone that needs them on the web. This takes some load off of their update servers. But, uses data, bad for those on capped Internet. And this is on by default. Similar to the way "torrents" work.

I don't use Windows myself (Linux), although I do have a partition with 10 installed for reference.

You can download a copy of Windows and make an install disk, useful if you need to do more than one computer. I've upgraded a couple neighbors and family. Haven't had many issues. This also works if you aren't getting the notification for 10.

Automatic updates and some settings make it annoying for capped Internet.

I have Windows 8.1 on my computer and have been offered the "NEW" Windows 10. I looked into the privacy concerns on the new operating system and decided I am not interested in it at all. Microsoft is basically saying your computer and it operating system are theirs to do with what ever they want if they decide your a threat to their system. The new Windows also searches through your emails /web sites visited so that they can target advertising and website to you.

I dislike Windows 8.1 and really wanted something "better" but at this time I do not feel Windows 10 is a program I want on any of MY personal computers.

Here are an item from the new service agreement that I find unsettling:

"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services."

Another thing is that Microsoft can use your band width to down load information to OTHER computers. This is areal issue if your on a metered service.

Here is a very good article about the privacy issues and how you can turn off much of the sharing issues.
Microsoft s Windows 10 is a privacy nightmare. Here s how to protect yourself

I appreciate the quick replies I got when I posted my questions here, and came back tonight to try and learn from older post about my tractor. I don't know about tractors but I do know some about computers. So I will give may thoughts to help who it may. It is best to wait for awhile (at least 1 year) before doing any new version of Windows and about half that time before you do a major Service Pack update. Too many things that are not "dry" / proven tested... in an new version. As for installing a new version of windows on an existing version of windows. To me it is like trying to put a new motor in your car and leave the existing motor in there too.... just hope they work well together. Now uncle Bill will tell you it will work and many people do not have a problem at all.... but many do. If it is your home computer that you can afford to tweak and work with until it is all working correct, that is up to you. If it is your office pc or home pc that you cannot afford the down time, I would stay with what you have. If you have XP Microsoft does not offer the free upgrade. If you have win 7, chances are you will purchase a new computer before Microsoft stops support for it. If you have Win 8, that is the nightmare Microsoft is trying to fix with Windows 10.

Just My Thoughts

somehow Microsoft installed windows 10 for me. I don't remember clicking on anything to install it. I tried it for a week. found it hard to use, and computer seemed a lot slower. tonight I did system restore to go back to windows 7. I am a happy camper now.

I'm in the process of uninstalling W10 on my wifes laptop now. I suppose if you are a big smart phone/tablet/touch screen type it's great, but for us it's horrible.

Have you ever read the license agreement that comes with some of the electronics and software that you "buy" or should I say THINK you are buying? Many require you to return the item to the seller if they ask for it. Others state that you own NOTHING, and are only being "allowed" to use it for as long as they see fit. Others claim ownership to your $100,000 plus tractor as their "intellectual" property.
Just for grins, you might want to go back and read some of the old licensing agreements on older software like Windows 98 or even older. Had any of these agreements been enforced as they could have been, we might all have different attitudes today.

Maybe NOT such an easy decision. As to cars, I am not liking a lot of the gadgets they have on them - like "black boxes," pushbutton start/stop, key fobs that are required to use the car, etc. Same goes for Windows. I'll wait for folks like you to find the big problems and get them fixed!! In the meantime, the system I have is working fine, thank you.
