ot honda pilot tick

Just got a Honda pilot with 175,000 miles. It has a tick at idle up to about 12 to 1400 rpms. Runs good, no miss. Calls for 520 oil would a little heavier oil help. Former owner said they changed oil every 3,000 mi. Am I looking at a valve adjustment? It is a 2004. Thanks.

Those are adjustable.

While in there, take a look at the cam surface, could have a cam going flat, but likely just needs adjusting. Best check your specific model, could be different than the video.

As for the oil, those have variable valve timing, best keep the recommended viscosity.

Has the timing belt been changed yet ? With those amount of miles it should about be on it's second change interval. I'd for sure adjust the valves on any Honda (provided they were adjustable) if something is acting weird. The older models would loose clearance and then burn a valve.

Timing belt calls for replacement every 60k or 105k miles (depending on driving conditions (below 20*F or above 110*F).
Valve lifter adjustment calls for checking at 105k miles (if noisy)

I have seen a couple if these that had a noisy timing belt tensioner that went away at higher RPMs or near the RPM you mentioned.
