Case 2390 Transmission

I've heard tell that most Cases had powershift issues. Do you think that most of those
tractors have been fixed by now? Or, do they have recurring issues that keep failing?
Would you be afraid to have one for your main tillage and spraying tractor? All things
equal, would you rather have a White 2-155? Thanks!

I would take the 2390 hands down over the White. Pretty sure they had most of the bugs worked out by the 90 series.

Don't bet on it. My neighbors 2390 bought new used light. Trans went out. Cost 12000 to fix. Made it cost more than a new 4450 JD. Move on up to a magnum CIH.

To get that much in a case trany you would need to replace every part in it, and that's very unlikely. Either that or he was taken advantage of in an epic way.

2390 transmissions are very good and durable. There are just 2 things they need to last well over 10,000 hrs, run real Case but ran oil as other brands cause separation of the clutch discs and seal failures. The other is to not leave it in reverse during stationary pto work like manure pump or solo blower. They have warno,'s all over earning of this one so there is not much chance of doing that anyway. They are only 1000 rpm pto tho.

I wouldn't be so sure. I know a guy that had a 2290 or 2090 can't remember which now. $12k was the figure he mentioned when his trans went out. He sold it soon after. The $$$$ roll up pretty fast when a dealer gets inside any PS trans. Maybe he was taken as well. I don't know. There's a 2290 for sale near me that I just saw this morning. "Runs good but needs Trans work $3500".

They have a reliable power shift transmission. You have to like the way they operate though so I would say it is best to drive it a little. Like anything designed and put together by man, they can and do tear things up. As far as dollar amount to repair, no possible way to know. If you replaced every part you would have way way more than $12000 with no labor charge because a major failure does not limit itself to just the power shift.

That $$$ figure is spot on when repair work done in a former IH dealer that "won" the contract during the 1985 merger. The red dealers Hated to work on Case tractors, as you had to rebuild a powershift rather than just slap in a torque. Perhaps if the 50 series had been out longer, there trouble shooting skill would more properly train their Techs to service a powershift also.
