Autolite Starter help

I am working on putting the spare starter back together for the MH44. The metal cover in the middle of the picture was stuck in the starter, and I ended up tapping the armature to get it loose. I have it all cleaned up, but think the starter drive slid on the shaft, because the cover will slide back and forth about 1/2" and the armature is about that far back from the cap going on.

Should I loosen the drive up and slide it back so the cover has minimal slop?

There are also no thrust washers on either end of the armature, is this correct?

Any chance the new style drives for the delco's fit here?

Thanks

The ones that I have torn apart did have 2 thrust washers at each end. that would surely help with the play but, I'm no expert by any means.

I don't see how the drive could have moved in relation to the shaft if all the parts are intact and in good condition.

If its like the ones I have had apart, the bolt or setscrew on the left side in the above picture runs down into a hole in the shaft, so it is positive drive. And its a round hole, so it should not move.

The center bearing, you call it a cover is free to slide back and forth on the shaft. I think the housing locates it when assembled.

What you are calling the middle "cover" holds a bushing and the bolt more inboard though the spring has a pin at it's end that locks into a blind hole in the starter shaft. The drive didn't and ain't going anywhere.

(Unless some idiot has mucked with the special bolt!)

This is what the bolts look like... the one more towards the end of the shaft does NOT have the extended pin.
