cultipacker question

I have been using a worn out old single row cultipacker for several years now, really seems to help my turnip plots and clover germinate better. Its heavy, probably 8 foot wide or so and weighs at least 500 pounds, big tall wheels probably 14 inch at least. I think it used to have wooden bearings. I plan on finally getting around to fixing it up. The wheels are floppy, almost looks like one may be missing. The end wheels are split and must come apart and clamp to the axle somehow. The holes in the wheels seem to be bigger than the axle, I suppose this helps keep dirt from sticking. How tight are the wheels pushed together when they are set up right, should they be free to float independently?

Push em together snug. You dont want 'side to side' movement. That can cause breakage. They(the 'old' ones) used oiled/greased wood 'bearings'. Make 'new' ones from a block of wood.

I have an old cultipacker like that but with 2 axles/rows of wheels - front and rear.
Like yours, mine was badly worn.
I took pieces of 2" PVC drain pipe and drove them into the bearing housing where the wood had deteriorated. The pvc was a pretty close fit both ID and OD and tightened them up a LOT.
I don't know how well the pvc will last but I greased them good so we'll see.
Mine had clamps to keep the press wheels tight together. So I used a nylon rachet strap to pull them tight together and slugged the clamps tight with a BFH. Then tightened the clamps.
Used it for the first time on my plots this year and got a noticeably better germination rate compared to the old bed spring I had been using.

Is this what you have? I have all three pieces. The short ones I use singly for lawns behind the ATV. I made new oak bearings. I have a few extra wheels. The way mine works is the tooth wheel nests with the plain wheel.wheels are 14 inches diameter
