Generator polarizing

I have a 51 Case DC with a magneto, 6 volt. The battery cables are pretty rough. If I disconnect the battery to change them will I have to polarize them? Also, the ammeter doesn't work yet the battery is charging-- 8.5 volts on my volt meter. If I change the ammeter will I have to repolerize? Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check it again. I have a maintenance manual that tells me the charging power of the gen can be adjusted using the 'third brush'. Moving it in the direction of rotation increase charge. Logically moving it the opposite direction should decrease charging.

(quoted from post at 23:05:11 08/10/15) No to both concepts, the gen keeps its magnetic field easily for years. Jim

I just started a Farmall H that had not run for about 30 years. Evidently that is past the amount of time for the pole shoes to remain magnetized. As soon as I polarized the generator it started charging.

Still have to clean out the main fuel tank. did you know that in 30 years you can evaporate off an almost a fuel tank of fuel?
