Digging at the church today

Father called me about a stump he wanted out at the church and asked me to bring over my Oliver and dig it up.

The Oliver is not stable on the road gears with so little weight on the front and the backhoe on the back, so 11mph on the level but any hills at all I had to go down to 2nd at 3mph. I really can't figure out how to get to the top gears, R1-2-5-1, to the lower set. 3rd or 4th would have been nice.

Dug a bit, stumps and shrubs came right up. Put everything in the dumpster and went home. Got the ferguson and took it over. 4th gear all the way, like a gocart. Graded everything nicely.

If I'm understanding you your front is light going up the hill, fill the loader bucket to counter balance the tractor & when finished dump the load. Good
luck WILDMAN from Mo.

Yeah I need to get a weight on the front. Still not sure why I can't find the lower set of gears. If I can't shift there there'd be a hi-low selector somewhere, but it's no where to be found that i know of.

To get to the different ranges, you should let the lever go to the center of the range you are in. Then either move gear lever forward or pull it
back. That "should " allow you to move between ranges.

It may have jumped the rail in the transmission mines the same way but I can't get it into the high set gears someone told be to pull the shifter out and check the rails

I moved it to neutral, then strait down. Pushed clutch in and out, and could not go left to right at the bottom. I pushed in and pulled out, didn't move at all. I really have to play with it more, but it's so sloppy. There's a great deal of play in it. But I find neutral well enough, and go down but when I try to go left or right at the bottom, I get nothing.

I thought a backhoe was supposed to porpoise a little getting up to speed. The good ideas are always the simplest!

A word to the wise never put that backhoe in the ground unless the ground has been cleared
by a locating service like Miss Utility, actually its illegal also to dig in most places without first having it checked. One little gas line or Optic cable line can ruin your whole day.

Yeah we have that 800 number to call. When it came out a few years ago I had them check my house, my father had his checked, and the church. Fortunately there's no gas lines in the area, and all the power/phone/cable lines are overhead.

I will say though, when I called they said they would notify all utilities to mark their lines, which included water and sewer. When I got the all clear, neither sewer or water were marked, and they were the only lines underground in my yard, and I know where they are.

I called a guy to dig Mom's grave. He wouldn't dig the grave until I contacted Dig Alert. They thought I was nuts. The utility companies came out anyway. Stan

If it's a new house, or a standard yuppie, I get it. Idiots will dig just anywhere and don't know their land. Maybe it's different in other areas or new developments, but here if something is buried you know it.

(quoted from post at 09:52:12 08/11/15) Fatjay, if you're on the church grounds keeping team that old Ford probably helped move you up a notch!
Born and raised at the church, my father is the president of the board. I've done more work to keep that place standing, it's a shame some of the slugs that come through though.
