massey 65 brakes stopped working after adding axle oil

Does anyone know why after adding oil two both axles the brakes won't grab? I can push down as hard as i can and they won't grab

Oil on the shoes. Need to replace the rear axle seals, the shoes will be soaked and very difficult to get oil free. Unless you're on a tight budget, best to replace them.

Also be sure the level is correct. Too much oil will make them prone to leak, also the front seal could leak oil on the clutch. Be sure the drain hole in the bottom of the bell housing is clear.

Thanks, good advise, I will try draining some oil out first and see if that works, I'm not sure how much should be in there, it didn't have much in there, when I added some but at least the brakes work.

Yup, oil on the brakes, but they are disc brakes not drum/shoe brakes. Oil can leak from the differential plate seal or inner planetary seal, best to replace both seals while apart.

Lowering the oil level now won't do
a thing for the oily linings , they
are ruined and won't work again ...

I don't know how much different the brakes are on a 65 compared to a Ferguson 30, but I cleaned up the shoes on my 30 with brake clean and then used a small torch and lightly heated the shoes to boil out any oil. the brakes work good after that.

get a couple Qts of Lucas hub seal ,, and add it to the tranny ,,, it mite swell the seals to keep the oil in the tranny and not on the brakes

Even though your seals are leaking, the slots to let out oil at the bottom of the trumpets must be blocked, as these slots should let a lot of oil and condensation out before it will do any harm....A piece of wire or a hacksaw blade will clear the slots (which are where the axle trumpets and
transmission casing meet).....If you added oil to both axles then you must have filled the planetary hubs?...I am wondering if you could have overfilled them? usually level with the filler hole is sufficient,.....Could your breathers be blocked? these are usually on top of the hubs and need
taking off and blown out occasionally ......too much oil getting warm and expanding with blocked breathers will put extreme pressure on the seals, causing them to leak... Hope some of that helps!

A knowledgeable old MF mechanic told me if you suspect an oil leak into the 65 brakes, first lower the oil level to reduce the leak, then drive the tractor a mile or so with the brakes set...until they smoke. This may burn the oil off...if it works good...if it doesn't...pull it apart. As he said...what have you got to lose.

I lower the oil level and locked the brakes up and rode around the pasture till the brakes heated up, then I unlocked the brakes and now there back to being in need of repair but they are working like before.
Thanks a lot for all the ideas
