Water pump gasket

Been years since I've replaced a water pump.

Do you just clamp down the cardboard type gasket, or do you use a sealant? What type if so! Looking on the net, I suspect I'll get the same
variety of replies....

Ford 5200 tractor, not that it matters.

If the surface is clean and flat, no pitting, could get by dry.

My choice is usually what I have on hand. Permatex aviation sealer works (and it will store indefinitely), high temp silicone works too.

If the surfaces are good and flat I just lightly oil the gasket so it can form to fill the gap. That is what I was taught years ago.

Probably would be fine on a water pump with just the gasket, but I like to put on a thin even layer of sealant like Permatex Spray-a-Gasket. I would not use silicone on machined surfaces.

We usually checked the engine side for a flat side and then used Permatex sealant on the water pump side of the gasket, so if you removed the pump later, you would only have to scrape the gasket off the pump mating surface.

I always use Permatex Aviation Sealant.

The last one I did was on that stupid Gator. The gasket was a metal one. No cardboard or fiber of any kind. They said NO SEALANT. I got so worried I drove back up there and walked into the shop to ask the one I really trust. He confirmed it.

It doesn't leak but I am holding my breath.

Most gaskets are designed to be used dry. In some cases, using any type of sealer or additive can cause leakage. Some surfaces are designed to be used without even a gasket. Most Ford exhaust manifolds do not use a gasket - just a metal to metal seal - and they do not leak. If you look closely, the original gaskets on most engines did not use any kind of sealer. And, they did not leak for the life of the component that the gasket sealed against.
