Speaking of Propane Suppliers

Thinking about when I had a propane tank several years ago, the propane supplier would send me a yearly bill for "real estate taxes". I paid it and went on, but always wondered if that was legal. Do they still do that today?

The suppliers here charge a rental fee for the tank unless you own your own tank.

That rental fee covers all the inspection and regulator replacements that are needed.

I have never heard of a real estate tax on tanks???

Must have been Ferrellgas. Sounds like something they would try. They wrote the playbook many of the other propane companies abide by.

If you are in Kansas (or a similar tax happy state) it sounds about right. You pay property taxes on equipment. I worked for a soft drink distributor and we had to report every single vending machine we owned to the correct county and city where they were placed. When you have 400 machines in 6 counties and over 20 cities it takes a while. Don't even get me started on sales taxes.

It was Level propane. I googled them and they went out of business, burned all of their records in the corporate parking lot, and sold out to Another company and now Amerigas.

We were with Level when that happened. The Attorney General had a class action started that we were a part of. Next election the new guy did nothing to keep the suit going, probably still wating for them to do their job.

When I had propane I rented the tank.
Rental fee ($50 a year) covered everything including insurance on my gas in their tank.
Go to use the insurance one time.
Valve started leaking on tank and all the gas leaked out.
They fixed the valve and filled the tank for free since they had no idea how much was lost.
