OT Carharts Whirlpool question

Actually it is the washer that I use for my Carharts. It is an older top load style unit. The cold water never shut off when I ran a load this morning. Came back to a small flood. Any ideas what part failed? I think it is the water inlet valve. Parts online has them in stock and they say they sold 4000 last year. I hate to throw parts at an old machine, but it is a lot cheaper than a new washer.

If it's like any washer I've ever fooled with, there's a solenoid in the part where the hoses hook to the back. Might be just stuck with rust or lime.

that is the water inlet valve. I will take it apart tonight and see if it is just rust. No lime in this water :)

I have a newer washing machine that senses the water level by air pressure in a small tube. It has plugged with mildew and mold twice now and each time the washer flooded. I replaced the hose the second time it did it. Check if yours has this little air line. It connects to the back of the knob that you use to select the load size.

Try unplugging the power. If the water stops, there is a problem in the level control circuit bkpigs referred to.

If the water flows with the power disconnected, the valve is stuck open or there it something holding it open. There should be a screen before the valve or on the end of the hose.

Nice tractor ! I was 'informed' many moons ago to take my dirty, greasy work clothes to the Laundromat (actually a good idea). I no longer suffer from dirty, greasy work clothes (retired -I let the odd unit -shop towels and such- into the house washer when the 'bride' is away for the day. ;^)

Steve Has it right.

Unplug the machine.
If the water still flows replace the Water inlet valve
If the water stops take off the water pressure hose (clear tube mounted to side of tub) and clean it with bleach.
If that did not help check the water level switch.

Go to partselect.com and put in your model number it will tell you the lost like part you need for your problem. Pretty good site, I use it all the time for appliance problems at work. We use household washers and dryers there and I have been able to trouble shoot them using this site. Has been 100% correct in the past 2 years I have been using it.

Go to partselect.com and put in your model number it will tell you the most likely part you need for your problem.

Man did I blow that post.

Washer update, it was the fill/shut off valve, thanks for the input.
One other note, it is no wonder that Sears is going down the tubes. Found this part on their parts page. $29.00 plus $7.50 shipping. Same part# from Amazon $14.90 free shipping.
