Rye in a wagon question

I cut my 5 acres of rye 2 weeks ago, moisture was about 15%. Put it in a gravity wagon in the metal arch building with the doors closed and put a screw in aerator in it and plugged it in. Checked it last weekend, and it was 14% moisture, figured I'd let the fan run a few more days and check it again. It gets hot inside the shed and moisture has always been a problem in there. I took the grain probe today instead of just sticking my arm in as far as I could and grabbing a sample. I probed all the way to the bottom of the wagon. When I checked the moisture, it was 17.5%. With the wagon sitting in a closed shed, am I adding moisture instead of taking it out by running the fan continually??
 
I would not have the wagon in a close steel shed. You need fresh air for the fan to pull through the grain. I also usually do not shut any aeration fans off until the grain is at the moisture level I want it at. IF there is a moisture front moving up through the grain and you stop the air the grain my spoil right at the front.

As far as adding moisture to the grain. That is actually HARD to do. I have dried grain too much and ran the fans during rains an other high humidity times. Very little moisture was added. I think you just finally got a good sample. The grain might have been wetter when you started harvesting and that would have ended up on the bottom of the wagon.
 
Would you have a way to transfer it to second wagon ? That way it would get it mixed I have added preservative to barley and it made great feed
 
Does your moisture tester compensate for temp automatically, or do you need to take the temp of the sample and use a conversion chart?

Short version is grain temp may have gone up or down skewing the tester's moisture reading, if a manual temp compensation is needed.
