Killing Rose Bushes......

I have a LOT of little "Wild Rose" bushes coming up where I ripped massive plants out with the backhoe this spring.

Mom wants me to be "safe" and all nature friendly and stuff with it, dad and I are thinking Round Up when she ain't home!! :p

WILL Round Up take care of these little boogers?? It has been very dry here, and no rain in the forecast. I could probably get a good, strong spray on them tomorrow.

Sick and tired of them growing up in the equipment, and me getting cut when I am working in the meadow, or up in the junk yard. Just want em G O N E! :

What do you guys think? Round Up? 2,4-D? What??

Roundup will kill them, along with the grass underneath.

The best results using 2,4-D are in the spring, as soon as the roses hit 3/4 to full leaf. Never had much luck killing them this time of year. You'll burn them back, but they wont die.

The other thing to consider if you're "stealth" spraying is odor...Roundup is odorless, 2,4-D stinks. I used to go through the same thing with my Mom years ago.

It's a little extra effort, but I killed one out by just mowing over it each time I mowed my yard. Each week it would grow a little and each week I would mow it off. It finally gave up and died. If they are not allowed to leaf out, they cannot survive.

How about hittin' 'em with your weed burner?

If they are the same as the multiflora rose that we have , roundup will kill them. If that is what you have that's probably what I would use. I use a tank mix or Grazon and Remedy, it kills them and leaves the grass. I haven't had much luck with 2,4-D. It will burn them down but doesn't kill the root.

I worked on water softener. Had a bucket full of salt water. Opened the back door and gave flowers a drink. Mistake. Killed flowers. Nothing grew there for 2 years. Not sure if salt will kill roses. Might try putting down rock salt and see what happens.

next time you drain some loaded tires..save it.(the older and nastier, the better)
brush, trash trees, sucker growing stumps...cut em off, give em a soaking with that calcium when the cut is still fresh.
works pretty good.

I was going to suggest the calcium from tires too. I have a regular program here spraying poison ivy, bittersweet, and multi flora rose. I use any old brush killer product. The worst stuff is the bittersweet. It is spreading very quickly here in NH. it will pull down overhead utility wires, and the way it grows so dennsly it will kill huge trees with the combination of its weight and blocking sunlight. A few years ago I noticed multi flora rose high in a tree. it was about thirty feet up. I was able to hook it with the back of my tractor bucket and pull it off and put it on my burn pile.

Crossbow, heavy concentration as in directions for woody plants and roses.
Won't kill the grasses surrounding.
Safe for livestock grazing and hay.
Kills roses, brown in a day or 2.
Expensive but you won't need much for spot spraying.

There were to be some pellets you throw at the base of the bush to rid them. I think it was some form of concentrated 2-4-d
The ones in our field we just brushogged down and then just keep the field mowed. This took care of them.

What will happen is the deer will paw and eat the dirt where the salt is for years.

BTDT.

Right on! Thanks for the info guys!!!

I feel a field study coming on...

I have about 150 gallons of Calcium Chloride in barrels. I have been using it on the drive way in front of the shop. Keeps the dust down all summer, which is VERY important, because that is where I am painting...

I will try directly putting some CC on a few plants, cutting a few off and putting CC on, and then RoundUp'ing the rest to see what happens.

Round Up being what it is, I am sure it will take care of them. Mom doesn't realize just how SAFE RoundUp is. It is only one molecule different from a plants Glucose ( I believe thats right?)

A neighbor and her were talking about it one time, and he was trying to tell her how safe it was. She wouldn't hear of it. He then told her, "Round Up is so safe, I would swish the concentrate around in my mouth for a few min to prove it!!!" (ya, BS is what I was thinking)

Well, sure as snot, next time I was up at his place, he grabbed one of those carry/pump/spray bottles, and SPRAYED some in his mouth, swished it around, and spit it out!!!!!!

Wonder when he will get brain cancer or something.....

Thanks again for the info boys!! I am going to give it a go today!! ;)

The best way to get ride of multiflora rose (or ANY rose....), is to get 3-4 goats. They LOVE roses, and will eat them down to the nubs and kill them. I had a pasture full of them until the goats got in there and ate every one! None grew back.

We use cross bow with pretty decent success. An old farmer told me one time if you ever want to get a rose bush or a hedge tree to grow just park something in that spot and in afew years you won't hardly be able to get it back!

Crossbow, or a generic equivalent, works great here in Southern Illinois. Spray 'em and walk away - you're done.

Those granules that someone mentioned - I think one of those was called Tordon K. That stuff was potent, but I'm pretty sure you can't buy it now. Data sheet said that it was safe for cattle to eat the grass where it was applied, but everywhere the animal pee'd, the grass would die. I only used it once.

What will you or your mom be planted to replace the roses: lawn; pasture grasses; flowers; different bushes; or a vegetable garden? Just like any other crop farming, make sure whatever you apply will not affect the next crop.

Nothing at all!

There were a bunch of huge bushes in the area where I keep all of my equipment at the end of the meadow. I just ripped em all off at the ground with the back hoe, and smoothed the place out, and parked all of my stuff there.

They are now re growing right up through my discs, plows, seeder, etc, and I want them out of there BEFORE they turn into a really big problem!!! :p

I would be happy with dirt, or wild grasses growing back in... Not planning on planting or doing anything there though, and the animals are never up there anyways..

Best to use some form of 24D. If you use RU it will also kill the grasses. Then all sorts of WEEDS will grow in that area. Keep the grasses alive to keep weeds out.

You had better get it out of there quick or you will need a bigger tractor to break your equipment free!
