Makin' Rain

We have had a tough hay season like pretty much everyone else, with no rain in April or May, and precious little in June or July. Though there has been little rain there is a high likelihood in the forecast pretty much all the time so making hay has been very dicey. I have done OK despite poor forecasts, until today. I got it mowed by 10:00 and went to tedd it out around 1:00. I was just leaving the field when I felt rain drops. From bright sun to rain in 10 minutes. It was a quick shower so it will not have hurt the hay much, but I may have to discount it a little. I am very glad that I cut way back on my hay ground a few years ago. It is just not as satisfying as it used to be.

I knocked down some second cutting Monday. Just got done baling it. 54 round bales off 16 acres. It went 98 on the first. Beautiful hay.

I still have about half my hay crop to do but can not due to raining every few days. Never have cut the first cutting of hay this late in the 35 years I have been doing hay on my place. And the odd thing is what rain we are getting is just enough to stop you form wanting to cut it

I knocked down a small field of second cutting yesterday afternoon just before the front came thru and got lucky, put it up in small squares this afternoon before supper.

Put on fertilizer early-mid April, got very little rain until I mowed all my first cutting
last week in May, hasn't stopped raining since.

Lot of guys around here haven't got their first cutting done yet.

Got one 10 acre piece of clover, grown back to knee high, things are starting to dry out a
little, maybe mow it next week.

We just got back from a trip to Northern Wisconsin, I think every hay field along the way was cut and raked or just baled clean. saw the first wheat gone and straw being baled for this year.
