My 1st attempt at building a stone wall

When we bought this new house in 2008 there was nothing in the garden, just scrubby turf the builder had put down. The eastern boundary was this low earth bank, 7 feet lower down on the outside is a rarely used public footpath leading down to the coast.

Hacked out the inner face of the bank by hand. I'd already erected the woven wire stock fence & posts.

I'd scrounged rocks which had been removed from local farmers fields.

Random placing of stones, held together with dry-ish mix of sand & cement.

Planted small Hawthorn bushes and built the gate from wood from a pallet.

2 years later, hedge has grown and flowers in the soil behind the wall.

Very nice, and complete. We here in the midwest states hate hawthorn It is a nasty weed tree that spreads and is "really" a pain to remove. Jim

You and Larry@stinescorner do great work but where is you crane or backhoe? I see there is no shortage of stone.

Looks very nice and clean. I have needed to relay and repair dry walls in the back of my folks place, You find that a very slight tip into the dirt helps. Another thing is you should lay a bit thicker wall. The more beef to the wall makes for a little less give. You are holding back just a little dirt so don't worry. My wall is like 2 feet tall and an upper yard is above it. Much more pushing. Dry wall can come out nice or crap. Practice~!
