Apple trees have apple scab, and it's getting bad. Captan does not do a thing, altho it says it will. . Are there any actual cures for this scab?? Thanks guys.

Extension agent told me cedar rust that is hitting my trees. Funny how there are not any cedars within a mile of me and some apple trees are perfectly healthy and some look almost dead.
I was told that they need to be sprayed early in the year.

I know the fruit tree spray at home stores don't do anything. Some varieties are more susceptible than others. Trees related to McIntosh seem to be the worst. Commercial guys have stuff that work but you have to be certified. I'd love to have someone with a home remedy answer here.

Early spraying and keeping up with it is key for scab. You can start off your first few fungicide sprays (starting DURING bloom) with Manzate (Mancozeb or Pencozeb are other names). This is available "over the counter". Follow label and switch to Captan after several applications. Do not mix insectide during bloom but you can mix insecticide after pedal fall. Although i seem to be having the same issue with a Baldwin - severe scab yet the Cortland tree 12 feet away is perfectly fine. I do have a cedar tree nearby which others indicated may be the problem. Do not mix captan with dormant oil - you can cause captan injury. Hope this helps.
