hauling rate?

I'm going to Wyoming next month to pick up a corn head for my combine. Another collector asked about hauling a tractor back from Montana. It would add over 300 miles to the trip and the tractor would be most of the weight and over 1/2 the space coming back. It would make for a maxed out load. How much is a fair figure to charge for that? I'm expecting the tractor to weigh 15,000.

Well, I'm not a professional trucker, I just do a little hauling with my 1 ton and gooseneck for myself and friends. But here's what I would do: I'd figure up my costs to run the truck. (I don't remember offhand what my cost is, which is what I ask when hauling. But I do have it written down.) I would charge your normal hauling rate for the miles out of your way that you're going, then charge half that rate until delivery. So, if you charge $2.00 a mile normally, and drive 300 miles extra with his load, I'd charge $600+ $1.00 a mile for the number of miles you share. Unless it's 150 extra miles empty to pick up his load and 150 extra loaded miles, then I'd probably go whatever your empty rate is plus whatever your loaded rate is plus half of your loaded rate for the loaded miles you share. But that's just me, I don't haul for a living. -Andy

What do you get per mile for your truck at your regular job? That would be the fair amount for the trip,I think.Especially if this guy is not a friend. You also have loading and unloading time to consider.Mark

I agree. Anything that you are driving ONLY to get to his tractor, or ONLY to get it home should be full price, then anything that you would have driven anyways (to get your header, whether you were getting his tractor or not) split the price...

I would consider that fair as the buyer/costumer.
