Dubious distinction

There's a new list of the ten worst cities in Michigan. It seems that Greenville made number 7. They're the largest town here in Montcalm County, the next town west of me,about ten miles away.
Surprisingly,Detroit wasn't even on the list. There's something to celebrate, being worse than Detroit.
10 worst

I'd sure as heck like to know where they come up with these cities. Greenville sure as heck has a lot less violent crime than Detroit, not nearly the number of vacant and decaying homes either. Heck, Greenville doesn't have to worry about football and a certain professional team that is a perennial loser, so that alone should make it a great city.

Whoever wrote that article is a complete idiot. Greenville and Lapeer do not belong on that list. Detroit, Inkster and a few others do.

They state that the following things were considered:

•Good schools

Not good or bad according to you but based on national standards.

•Lots of jobs

This would kill many towns rankings across the mid west. Few if any jobs available to attract new people. This is what they are looking at, not if there are enough jobs for the current residents. Try looking at this as if you want to move and this is a town you are thinking about.

•Low crime

Nuff said.

•High incomes

Another killer across the Midwest.

•Solid home prices

Nothing to add.

•Lots of things to do

This doesn't mean from our older folks description. This is from what younger people would think. A bar and a movie theater isn't much to do. And that's in town, not a short drive. So town/community pools, parks and play grounds, dinner theater and so on. Kinda like taking a 15YO kid to a tractor show in the middle of nowhere. No WIFI, no TV and no friends to hang out with and only old country or bluegrass for evening entertainment isn't going to please most 15 year olds today. Heck I'm 60 and that sounds boring!

I looked up Greenville. Small Midwest town. In other words no or low paying jobs. Nothing to do according to the folks looking at the town. They are looking at things that will attract young families, not folks ready for a retirement community.

I wonder how Escanaba got on the list yet they ignore Sawyer/Gwinn? K I Sawyer has turned into a real hell hole since the Air Force left. Last time I was in Lansing it wasn't all that good either.

Some of them I'd expect, like Flint(&suburb Beecher ), Buena Vista, Pontiac, Muskegon, etc. Surprises Greenville, Lapeer. No way can Detroit stay off that list. Guess it's too bad to count.
