I guess I am too trusting

I called a guy about a CO2 cylinder for my small mig welder. He had several advertised as full. He said he usually gets 150.00 for the bottles, but now is selling them for 125.00 and said he had regulators for 50.00. We met at a restaurant. I looked at the regulator it was a china one HF sells for a lot less. I said I just want the tank. Ok he said it is 150.00. I thought it was 125.00. Since you didn't buy the regulator it is now 150.00 for the tank. I paid for the tank, it is still a bit less I could buy a tank for, Then I get home and the tank is MT. I called him and after a few words, he hung up on me. I go the welding shop to exchange the tank. The guy there said that looks like a Pepsi Cola tank with the name sanded off. He exchanged it anyway. My tank was made of aluminum, the one I got in exchange is steel. He must of thought the aluminum was worth exchanging. So now I have a full tank. Total now is $180.00 Just about what a tank would cost without meeting a jerk. Stan

I'm so clueless I had to think a while before realizing the tank was empty -MT- instead of some certification mark on it. Sheez.

Isn't it something how people are. Always been that way, but the Internet makes them seem to really shine.

Yep, I agree with Retired Farmer, plus, if you have to meet somewhere like a restaurant, or gas station to conduct business, rather that the sellers place of business, (which in this case, he likely had no business address,) I would be very cautious. Sorry to hear you got the shaft, but thanks for the reminder, we all tend to let our guard down from time to time.

I agree you are too trusting, always assume they're empty unless proven otherwise. Its like
buying a 5 gal bucket of oil at an auction with the seal broken don't ever buy it unless
you need something to oil chains with or the roll of fencing that 'only has a couple of feet that been used off of it'.

I've been selling off a bunch of excess junk on craigslist.
Any time someone comes over to look I make it obvious that I'm writing down their license plate number. Might make me seem rude and suspicious but come to think of it, I am rude and suspicious. And at least I have a lead if something goes sour.

Make a post on CL regarding your experience with the crook. If you keep one other person from getting scammed, it was worth the post (though not the experience).

I'm going to tell you about a "flashback" I had a few years ago. I have been forced to downsize from real tractors to garden tractors to collect. I got my first one and was looking for parts. I found a guy on the internet that had some NOS parts for the tractor I had. I called and talked to him and told him what I needed and asked him how much it would be. He told me "I will send you the parts and an invoice. When you get them, just send me a check or MO". Since then I have ordered from him several times and it is the same thing. It is very refreshing to find someone that actually trusts people still.

UltraDog,

I take it a bit further, ask for ID and make a copy.

I will not be a victim of my own making. Think I am rude?
