Hay storage

Guys,
I put up a couple hundred small squares every winter. They are stored it a tent shelter with a moisture barrier over the dirt and on pallets.
Every year the row of bales that touch the pallets get moldy on the bottom. Any way to prevent this. ? @ $5+ per bale ,i'm throwing money away.

Are you turning the first layer up on edge? that helps. Also you could spread salt down on the pallets. Worth a try. gobble

I'm no expert by any means but when I was a kid hauling and stacking square bales we placed the first layer cut side down on the bare dirt in the hay shed no pallets or tarps. Sometimes but not often we'd sprinkle rock salt on the first layer lr more if the hay was green and the bales felt warm inside.

Cheapest way is to throw some old dry hay or straw down on the pallets. I used to clean our barn loft out to the floor and had the same trouble. 3-6" of loose hay that compresses into a 1-2" layer works perfect to prevent it.

It will do that loaded on parked haywagons too.
