i have a 7 month old ewe lamb that is drooling really bad and it's tounge is partially protruding , acts like it wants to eat but just pushes the feed around. can't find any injury. only thing different is i clipped the pasture to slow down the wild carrots. any thoughts??? seems like all the area vets are on vacation now..........JIM

Has she been sheared? If not I'd get the wool off.She is probably suffering from heat. Also, check her clean cool water supply.

A seven month old lamb doesn't need shearing.

should have mentioned it is a dorper but does have it's wool but is in process of shedding, she also is carrying her head canted to one side and ears drooping...they have access to shade a building and clean water, she is the only one out of 9 that is sick

Sounds like acidosis

It sounds like Botulism, both from the description of the symptoms which are classic for the disease and due to the fact that you recently clipped the pastures, if you killed a field rat or snake with the mower and that lamb ate some carcass infected grass it could trigger the disease or if there was any ohther rotten or decayed matter that was exposed. There are anti toxins that you can inject and usually work if the animal has not started to suffer paralysis yet, which is the next stage of the disease. This time of year you can almost be assured it will be one of the clostridial dieseases and if you do not have your flock on a vaccination program you may want to start.

Jim.........giver a shot of "8-WAY". clostridium perfringens tetanus toxoid. Give 1-cc sub-cut. Pick-up the skin between the shoulder blades and inject in the space. NO MUSCLE shot, ok? Gitta copy of "Raising Sheep the Modern Way" by Norm Gates, Univ Wash State in Spokane. I gotta outta the sheepie bidness when I couldn't sell my graded wool to enny wool buyer. When I first got into the wool business, I got $1.12/pound. Last offer was $0.23/lb. And I hadda hire the shearer too. The same flock of white wool ewes, wool from BLACK-FACE sheep is NOT as valuable. However, black face sheep produce a BIGGER carcass and more meat. The BIGGEST problem with sheep is WW2. Solders came home and told the wife NEVER serve me LAMB. Well guess what? They weren't being served lamb but OLD STINKY TOUGH breeding ewes. Real LAMB is sweet and tender and delicious. Gravy from roast leg of lamb on mashed potatoes is to die for. ........sheepie Dell

Sounds like wooden tongue. A shot of iodine will cure it.
That is if wooden tongue occurs in sheep as it can in cattle.
Wooden tongue is caused by the same bacteria that causes lump jaw

That's the truth. Give people mutton, call it lamb and ruin the market. But there's a big list of stuff people don't eat anymore- Lamb, squab, duck, goose, veal...lots more I suppose.
