OT Logsplitter dimentions

What size I beam do you need for a log splitter? any help would be appreciated. I am using a 4.5 in dia. cylinder.

We're making ours with a W6 I-beam, 6" X 6". It worked for the other one, and should be good for 50 ton. Some manufacturers go up to a 8"X8" or 10"x10" many variations. Depends on the tonnage.Hope it helps,
if you are going to build one, take your time and don't be in a hurry, strength is important.

Same size cylinder in the 28 ton speeco/huskee, well in diameter anyway. The beam on that one is just under 6" at the web, not sure about the flange or web thickness, just ran out in the rain and measured under the tarp. No idea of how many pounds per foot or the shape used per A.I.S.C. I'd imagine anything similar to what is used on one of these Huskees or Speeco models would work. Did you follow Lou from Wisconsin's post on their recent splitter build ? That was a good pictorial view of building a log splitter. I've seen a lot of older factory and or home built ones that use a variety of steel shapes, some even with 2 pipe side by side, amazing how many different ways or ideas one can use to build something to split wood.

Foot plate is 1 1/4" (thats inch and a quarter) some tried it with less and it bends. Seen some use flat plate stood on the side but I don't trust them. This works for us, haven't bent or broken any foot plate on ours and we've split some wood side ways, cause it was cut too long. Any other help I can provide? I will be glad to.

Pat,
This would be quite a costly undertaking for us if we went by a picture like we did the first splitter we built. Notice the foot plate on this one, plus the beautiful welding job. what a project for guys like us to undertake, cause I don't think the bank would finance the materials or the splitter complete. Plus our welder wouldn't handle welding 2" steel with one pass, lol. I just look at them and drool, not too hard for a 80 yr old man, drool that is.lol. Whoever builds them made sure to go heavier than required so no breakage. Love to see work like this.

We got a splitter. 8 inch beam want to say 1/2 inch thick. Got a homebuilt pump and 8 hp briggs not sure on pressure or gpm exact. Got a 6 inch chrome plated cylinder (bore not overall, that's 8 inches) off a payloader must be a high psi pump because if the wood doesn't split it twist that beam like a pretzel even after it got additional bracing
