Late (short) season potatoes

It's been wet to the point where it is just as well nothing got in or it would have rotted. I would like to get something in and I thought up until the 4th I would have put Yukon's in but now I am worried about doing that. Usually killer frosts do not hit until mid-October. Any other ideas. I am ready with beet seed and broccoli.

My dad would take the little potatoes dug now and plant them for a fall crop. Our average first frost date is also Oct 15.

I usually plant Dark Red Norlands around the 4TH. They make it in plenty of time. I also plant some the first week end in May. I will be digging them soon.

I think you can still enjoy quite a bit even at this time. You can plant all kinds of greens that will produce just fine. Broccoli should produce, but I forget the duration it takes from planting until you can pick. I've got one seedling tray loaded with broccoli plants to put in this evening actually, that I delayed so it does not all come in at once, some of which I hope to freeze. I planted some broccoli earlier around the solstice and its thriving right now. I'll mulch rows I don't use until its time. In this case one row of corn did not come up, so these will go there after I cultivate by hand. I've done that with potatoes, worst is they will just be smaller as I have experienced, but one 70' row was quite a bit actually, got me through winter. In '13 I planted a 70'x50' area of sweet corn, 3 or 4 types at different durations until harvest. I had planted an earlier crop in my upper garden and the rain was so prevalent, temperatures low and this was June, none of it germinated. I planted the larger area later on the summer solstice, after the rains let up, got my first ear by Labor Day, and it was literally the best sweet corn I have ever had until that time. It may have been an early and often type as I recall. I planted the shorter duration in front of the longer growing corn, figured it would come in front to back when planting, which it did.

We have planted Kennebec potatoes many times in the last week of July. Our frost date is considered to be October 10. Usually get nicer potatoes than the spring planting.
