I changed the oil and the filter on this vehicle years ago. Months later, my girlfriend had a mechanic check out an oil leak and he changed the oil. He told her that the filter was messed up in it. The next oil change was at an oil change business. Yesterday I changed the oil and filter again. The old filter was crushed and twisted. The filter is a pleated paper filter that fits in a metal canister with a screw on cap. One end of the filter was 4 tabs that hold it in place on the cap. Now I am wondering if a person should push the filter in, over the tube that the other end slides over and then screw in the cap. Is the filter getting messed up because it is installed in-correctly or is it being crushed because it is plugging up and the oil pump over powers it?
I cleaned the inside of the cap in my parts washer. It had more gunk in it than I thought a motor should have.
Thank you
