Jumping 24V with 12V

Trying to spin it over with half voltage won't be productive. If only one of your 12v batteries is dead or weak, jumping that one with another 12v might get it to spin.

(quoted from post at 07:28:26 07/06/15) Have a tractor with a 24V system using 2 12 Volt batteries. Can I use jumper cables to jump this with a 12 Volt charging system?

Attach a 12 volt vehicle to each 12 volt battery of 24 volt tractor taking extra precaution to attach each battery + to + & - to - NOT ALLOWING either jump vehicle body parts to touch tractor. BTDT many times when I was employed at a JD dealer with no ill effects to any vehicle involved.

If one tractor battery is a lot lower voltage then attach vehicle to that low battery + to + & - to -

You can jump ONE of the 12 volt batteries with another 12 volt battery, HOWEVER that's not so good and wont help much if the other non jumped battery is weak. If one 12 volt tractor battery is good and the other weak, you might get by jumping ONLY the bad tractor battery BUT NO GUARANTEE TO THAT.

NO you cant jump the tractors series 24 volts (both its batteries) with only one 12 volt battery. WELL DUH

If you want to use 2 jumpers (one 12 volt jump for each tractor battery) like 2 trucks or truck and a car etc., that can work subject to battery conditions.

If its a 24 volt Deere Diesel and one battery keeps discharging, it could be due to excess copper brush dust building up in the starter motor.

Odds are the right side battery is dead because the starter is full of carbon dust, mud, manure and moisture.
The tractor may start via boosting just the right side battery if the left side is still charged.
Those tractors need an upgrade with an additional start solenoid.

(quoted from post at 10:17:30 07/06/15) He does not have a Deere. He has a regular 24 volt system like a military vehicle or an old old truck.

How are you able to read his mind over the internet and know ?

I would use a battery hydrometer and check the specific gravity in all the cells of each battery. This will tell you if you have a bad battery and maybe why it's not starting.
