hoping someone can steer me in the right direction,i am going to check out a d4 for sale, the owner says it looses drive in forward or reverse, it goes for a few feet then stops, is there something to check first or a likely cause, according to him the dozer was driving fine three months ago, i dont think he is very dozer literate (like me) so it may be a loose nut behind the wheel, i have not worked on dozers but i do alot of automotive work, any advice would be greatly appreciated, i was going to check the main clutch first???

Gear drive, I would check the clutch. They have a hand clutch is it adjusted correctly? It would have to
snap in to stay engaged. Or steering clutches could be slipping but both at the same time?

I don't know much about dozers, but I do know that undercarriage repair is so expensive, that being able to fix a bunch of other things doesn't overcome a bad undercarriage.

check the main clutch adjustment--make sure it snaps in when pulling back---there is a plate over it that can be removed and a spider assembly with a locking knob that you pull to tighten in a clockwise direction

Yes and check the linkages connecting the clutch to the handle for play or wear a little play can go
a long way in causing it not to pull right.
