OT. Pine Tree Sap Problem

We have an old pine tree (actually, a Cedar Deodara) and the ground under it looks highly varnished. It's dropping sap everywhere. We've lived here since 1986 and never saw this before. We're wondering if the drought out here in California has anything to do with it. We haven't received any significant rainfall for 4 years. Any help is much appreciated.

I did a little research. It seems that this is a defense that the tree uses to repel pests (most likely spider mites). If you value the tree I would suggest having an expert determine the pest. Treatment includes heavy watering, but with your restrictions this may not be an option. I feel for you.

Thanks for your info and the time you put into this. I might call an expert, but it also may end up being firewood.

little rain in 4 years? Not to make you feel bad, but we have had right at 26" since the first of April.

The last really, really dry year we have had here is 1980.

Guess those mountains filter the rain out.

Good luck, Gene

I cut 55 pines around the house in 1996 I have forgot about the dammm sap till you brought it up... I thought it was a natural thang with them...

I don't know how long a pine will live but around here you harvest them they are not a long life 200 year old tree...
