OT does anyone own or run a small motel?

IF so how has it been good or bad? Any
profit or loss.

The farmer that I worked for as a kid, along with one son and one daughter, built two and did very well with them. After he passed on around fourteen years ago, they sold them to Indians. They have, it appears, an uncanny ability to take something very nice and run it right down hill.

I work the night shift at a local Inn. 138 rooms with a conference center. The overnight rooms average 17 bucks profit per night. The conference center and dining room is where you make your profit. Weddings and meetings. We are always steady and full being inside a state park. Average cost to rent the ballroom is $2,000. Food and bar are extra. Typical wedding of 150 people eating and drinking keg beer runs about $9,000.

We built a 20 room motel in 1997. It was in a town of roughly 4000 people. Bought an existing 32 room motel there in 1998. Ran them until 2006. Sold them to a local family.

We were farmers before we got into motel business. Bought some more farms while in the motel business. When we sold the motels we ran quite a few cows. Since then we have sold some of the farms and cattle with owner financing.

Motel business was extremely good to us. We ran the business, had living quarters in the new one. My wife cleaned the rooms with the helpers daily. I did a lot of the maintenance work.

It seems "Habib" has bought many of the smaller franchise or mom n pop motels, or at least that's usually who is behind the desk at check in. Since we travel the USA in our RV we seldom have occasion to trade at such places. I remember as kids when on vacation it was our job to find a place with signs which read VACANCY and Air Conditioned Rooms and even a Pool lol what a treat that was to have AC.

I heard tell that a motel near the seedy part of town will do good as you can rent the rooms by the hour. LOL Don't know for sure, I never tried it. LOL

A friend of mine does lot of door work for motels . He said he noticed almost every owner or managers last name was "Patel ". He was told by one that there is a wealthy family named Patel , that sets up families as motel owners and they pay them a percentage back . They take the Patel name as a show of gratitude .

I believe that Patel is like smith or Jones in India. I know two and neither is involved in hotels or motels.
