I'm looking at an 1460 IH combine 1981 with 6k hours and 800 on
rebuild from a dealer. Has new hydro and air pump and looks to
have nice original paint. Supposedly needs nothing and could go to
field. 7500 for the machine. Ideas or suggestions on what to watch
out for? Brakes and final drives were weak from what I have read
on forums on these machines?

That is too high for the hours. The rebuild motor is only part of the trouble. I would look hared at the bins floor and unload system. They worn bad around the sumps. Then you would push the side of the bin out in real dry corn.

You can buy 1660s for that type of money if you shop hard.

Open gears under the vertical unload auger were always a weak spot. The bushings go bad there if not greased frequently. Most any metal that touches grain on that machine should have been replaced twice by now.

Are there receipts for what was replaced at the dealer service 800 hours ago ? If so inspect those parts on the receipt, they should look almost new now. Inspect the grain tank after dark- -put a buddy inside with a flashlight shining around the augers and you look up from outside the tank. Easy to spot small holes this way and believe me, they will enlarge in a hurry if they are there.

Yes brakes are almost always non-functional, finals can be ok if not abused but add a hopper extension at your own risk. Inspect inside of drive rims for any sign of oil leakage from final. If you see oil you need to replace the bearings in the final. The shaft coming out of the p.t.o. on the engine is splined, grab the belt there and rock back and fourth to determine how much wear is on the spline.

1460's are tough old birds though in my opinion, and if it is in tip top condition I wouldn't hesitate to pay 7.5k.
