Trany oil for 1954 Ferguson TEA-20

Hi there,

Does anyone know with some degree of certainty, what type of oil I should use to refill the transmission of my 1954 Ferguson TEA-20? The manual I have lists a number of products from various manufacturers, which I doubt even exist anymore. In general terms, it describes the transmission lubricant as 50 weight engine oil of 90 weight gear oil. Does that sound right? One dealer suggested using 80w-90 gear oil. I primarily use the tractor in summer and fall, not winter. At least, not yet.

I just want to be sure since I need about 22.8 litres for a full change out.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

I had a TE 20 and everybody said in those days with gear oil being the lube recommended, GL-1 (straight mineral oil) 90 weight. Rumor had it that the currently popular GL-5 has sulphur in it as an additive and attacks the yellow metal in the tranny. Yellow metal refers to brass/bronze which are used for support bushings on some of the shafts. GL-1 is still available at rural stores of various types including auto parts and WM.

Your original Ferguson manual should tell you it is GL-1 90 wt. mineral oil which is what it left the factory with. However if you check the Ferguson archives you will find modern engine oil will work great then you only have to stock one kind of oil for that tractor. NAPA handles GL-1 90wt in 5 and 1 gallon containers.

Since you're only needing a degree of certainty rather than complete, I would use any good 15W-40 motor oil. That's what I have in my TO20 in both the motor and trans and it's working well.

Well since you can now use hyd. fluid in trannies, hyd. and diffs, aka '65 Ford 3000 and cousins to name a few vs 63 Ford 2000 and
cousins where GLl-1 went into the tranny and diff with hyd fluid in the hyd. sump, probably doesn't much matter what you put in it.
Thicker oil will leak less and shift harder in the winter, but keep worn gears quieter.
