Bee sting, mosquito bite and a penny

In the past I've taped a penny over a bee sting and it reduced swelling and pain. So I got a mosquito bite and taped a penny to it. Same results, no itching, no signs of a bite, no redness, except for the mosquito bite I forgot to tape a penny to. It red and itchy. I have no clue why a penny works, but it seems to work for me. Does it work for you or do you have another cure.

I don't know about any of that, but if you put a penny in a clear plastic bag, fill it with water and hang it in a doorway, it's supposed to stop flies from coming in. Never tried it though.

The new pennies? Copper coated zinc, I think, yes?

So does this remedy require the old time copper coins or will the new cheaper version do?
I haven't heard of this... I don't get bit for some reason, but the Missus swells up like a hideous troll for even the tiniest bite.
I'll try it on her. Thanks.

I'll try that tomorrow and see if it keeps the criters out of the pole barn. How many bags for a 8x10 door?

Yup it does work. Works better if you use a bunch of pennies (shinny ones). Something about light reflecting in the water messes up the fly's multi faceted eyeballs and makes them get spooked. Or something!!

So, the bag needs to be the size of the door? I like the idea of using a screen instead of a bag with a penny in it.

Naw, I'm only kidding, but that would indeed keep the flies out. This is supposed to work in an entry door in a house, and use a ZipLok freezer bag. Fill it about half way and attach it to the top of the doorway.. SHMBO said we did try this once and it had moderate success.

For a bee sting the best thing to put on it right away is steak tenderizer like A1. The steak tenderizer breaks down the poison from the sting and stops swelling. My wife has did this several times and it works. We found out about this from a pharmacist.

There is around 10,000 acres of swamp around my house, last week we got 1 1/2" of rain.....
Don't have enough pennies lol

My Grandmother always said put a bucket of cow manure in the living room to keep the flies out of the kitchen.

(quoted from post at 18:27:48 06/20/15) My wife put a penny in a plastic bag of water and hung it by our back door to keep flies out.
I had to laugh at her cocamainy idea a few days later when I saw a fly resting on the plastic bag.

That works real good up here in NNY in January and February!

My grandmother wore a copper bracelet for arthritis, yet I've read its not likely to make a difference, she said it did for her.

If I get nailed by mosquitoes around this place, I don't react to their bites, the next day, there will be no visible effects and its as if it never happened. If I go 33.3 miles south west to a friends place, where we often have family gatherings, get bit by any of those there, (back in mid May they were brutal and it was drought like dry) and they will itch like heck for a week ! These mosquitoes were nasty, I got tore up at that gathering, unexpectedly, as last weekend I was there, and we are caught up on rain, not one bite!

Never used anything on a bee sting but used accent on jelly fish stings. It was very effective.I kept a container on the boat.It would probably work on insect bites/stings.

Mom always mixed cleaning ammonia with dirt and packed that mud on top of the sting/bite.

Seems like it worked... maybe the ammonia neutralized the venom(?) from the bug. BUT I'm surprised the dirt didn't cause some kind of infection.

You can prevent mosquito bites you have to be fast enough to put the head of the penny on the tail of the mosquito before it bits you. I used the head side. It left the impression of Lincoln on my arm.

You guys up there probably didn't even have any copper in your pennies. Even your 'silver' quarters are made of steel!!!

I believe the mosquito's saliva is the culprit, if you are allergic to it, some people don't seem to be. That does sound like a familiar remedy for a bee sting. When I was a kid, the farm being close to other houses and neighbors, one of which was a long time family friend, myself and their oldest son, would play on the old "RUSTY" D7 caterpillar, and if it sat, every summer it was loaded with wasps, we'd get stung every time. His mother had these green capsule things, and I thought there was an ammonia smell to them. We'd get stung so many times, she'd run out of them ! One time we escaped without getting stung and I said "you saved my life" LOL, we still joke about it today 40 some odd years later !

A recent news story told how a hospital cut diseases transmitted by often touched surfaces like door knobs, hand rails, switch plates , by changing those surfaces to copper plated metal. Copper in the water tank kills green alge, also hear it kills germs on skin and other surfaces.

Billy NY,

Interesting story. I wonder what was in those capsules.

I got swarmed by wasps as a kid and ended up with 8 stings. Not fun.

Mosquitos have always bitten me and our oldest daughter and we both react badly to it (large welts and a lot of itching)... yet they don't much bother my husband, son nor our youngest daughter. Wish I could figure out the key to what makes them prefer to bite the two of us!
