Tractor painting

How long can I go between primering and applying finish coat without having to sand or reprimering. 1week, 1month, 6mos, 1year ?????????????

Primer is often porus and does not prevent rust. as such the answer depends on the humidity in your location, and the type of primer. after lable curing, I would paint within a week. Jim

i try and get the paint on with in the week if i can, the longer you want there is more of a chance down the road to have paint problems with smal areas wanting to peal up. i do both trucks and tractors and for the most part use auto grade paint with hardner. hope this helps.

Depends on the primer. PPG epoxy primer I have been using says max 3 days or re-sand and re-coat. Google the spec sheet for what you are using and follow the directions.

If it's an epoxy primer you usually have 8 hours to topcoat. Other type primers if kept reasonably clean and dry you could wait years to sand and topcoat. Dust wouldn't hurt it. It's allowing oils to get on the primer that would give you heck.

Just follow the directions on the primer you will be using it w3ill vary depending on type and brand. I have used Rust-Oleum sometimes painted same day or even weeks all with good results.

I use Omni paint and primer. The primer is an epoxy type. Depending on conditions, I apply the paint anywhere from 1 hour to three days after the primer. After three days I sand with 1500 grit. Have never had a problem but, you must make darned sure that the primer has dried before painting and if you are going to paint real soon after applying the primer, make sure you don't do it on a hot day and where the sun can beat on it. I did that once and only once. I used a lot more words than paint that day.

I've used Rustoleum paint with real success. I use the rusty metal primer,

and have put on the top coat within a half hour (assuming it was a good

drying day).

I'm not a painting expert but primers I've seen usually specify a time for top-coating without sanding. 8 hours for an epoxy I've used recently to 24 for VariPrime. A little sanding never hurts, though.

For any paint there is tech sheets and application guides. All is explained in these and they must be read to use the paint.

I'm restoring an IB over a year's period and primer one piece at a time and then want to paint top coat all at once when all parts are ready.
