Engine bearings

Ok! Tonight I went to help a neighbor rebuild his international 656 diesel! Neither one of us are engine rebuilders at all but hey you gotta learn somehow! So we put the new main bearings in which the old ones were standard and the new ones are standard! Put them all in tried to roll the crank over couldn't even with a small pry bar loosened all but one bearing still couldn't turn it at the torque spec the bok called for think it was 90 Pounds! So loosened the last one rolled over of course so I took half of a old bearing put it in tightened it rolled over fine! Could they have gave us the wrong size bearings but marked them as standard? Cause I think it should roll over kinda snug with new bearings we did put white litheum grease on the new bearings!

well you missed the most important thing... you must check clearances on the brgs. quite possible you have an undersize in there. but you need to plastigage them.

you didnt put grease on the backside of the bearing did you ? and yes you need to plastigauge the bearing surface to see what clearance you have

How can I have under size the old bearings we took out were standard still IH bearings marked standard and the new bearings we got are marked standard! So unless the new ones are marked wrong! It's the only thing I can think of! We could plasti gage them tomorrow!

You need a ball mike to measure them had one bearing for a Cub last winter that was 10thous over and lke you said couldnt turn it over after miking the bearing found the problem bad job of packing

Brian,

The caps on a 282 engine go with the tang slots

opposite , not together like most engines. I'm with

fixer, ask me how I know.

If the crank has been ground undersize and you put standard bearings in. The crank would be too loose, not too tight. Make sure the caps are all in the right place and turned the right way. Make sure you didn't get a piece of dirt under a bearing. Snug the caps all down and turn the crank. Torque each bearing one at a time an see which one is locking it up. Check the wear pattern on the old bearings. See if copper is showing on some and not the others, The block may need to be line bored. I build engines for a living. Any more questions?

Main caps on backwards? Switched from were they started? Plastagauge is the right thing to do.

P.S.... can you post a clear close-up photo of the wear surface of the bearing inserts that were "tight" 'til you loosened the cap bolts and then could turn it over?

The contact pattern should give some clues as to what is going on.

They are going in an "...International" so any bearings from anywhere should work shouldn't they? ;) (Sorry, had to add to the funny)
